“Who wrote the book of Love?”

According to the all-knowing Wikipedia, this was the title of a popular rock and roll/doo-wop song from 1957 originally written and recorded by a group called The Monotones. The lead singer, Charles Patrick, took his inspiration from a Pepsodent toothpaste commercial at the time which had the tagline “you’ll wonder where the yellow went, when you brush your teeth with Pepsodent.” From there, Patrick penned these lyrics, “I wonder, wonder, wonder who wrote the book of love?”  The other two members of the group, Warren Davis and George Malone, contributed the other words and music to the song.

If you’re wondering where the “boom” part of the song came from, apparently there was a kid outside kicking a ball against the garage door where the Monotones were rehearsing.  The Monotones liked the sound affect so much that they added it into the song’s arrangement.
